“It’ll Happen”

from the Punch Brothers’ new CD, “Punch”

If you know me, you probably know that I am a big fan of Chris Thile, mandolin virtuoso and former member of Nickel Creek. He’s with the same four guys this album as his last, but they’ve decided to rename themselves the Punch Brothers. This takes Thile’s name out of the limelight and makes it more of a band thing, but it’s ironic because he wrote most of the music on this album by himself.

There are very few similarities between “Punch” and his last album. There are no short catchy melodic songs and no traceable order to the structure of the songs. The entire album is very dissonant and requires your attention. Rather than the instruments layering and working together, they weave in and out of one another. I like the album a lot, but I’m the first to admit it’s a tough listen. If you’ve heard it, what do you think?
