I saw Pinback live last night at the Music Farm in Charleston. They are one of my favorite bands and have been for about three years. I told my friends after the show that I’m glad I finally saw them live, but they are much better in the studio. Some of their songs just really didn’t translate live to me too well. My favorite song ever by them is a song called Penelope, and I was disappointed how bad it sounded live. It sounded like a high school grunge band doing a crappy cover of it way too fast. I’m very critical of live performances, and I’ll have to admit that some songs sounded great. But seriously, come on. One thing I was impressed with was their song choice. The most annoying thing ever is when you go see a band and all they play is their new stuff and they hardly play any of their awesome old stuff. These dudes pulled out the best 5 songs from all four of their albums. They played pretty much every song I was wanting to hear, and that’s the first time I’ve been able to say that about a concert.
The song above is called Loro, and it is off their very first album. It was the best song of the night. They played it with just two bass guitars and drums.
Side Note: I hate iTunes. I wanted to put Penelope up for you to listen to, but I bought it on iTunes three years ago. Then I bought the whole CD at the store, but when I ripped it to my computer I had it set to not duplicate or replace songs I already have in my library. Now the CD is back in a box somewhere and I’m stuck with a .m4p that I can’t upload anywhere.
